Cut to Length

Steel is produced in large coils. When separate flat sheets are required, the metal is uncoiled and cut to the specified dimensions on a cut-to-length line. This puts the metal edges under compressive strain, potentially creating surface and edge defects on the sheet.

There are two methods used on the cut-to-length line. In the first, sheet unrolled from a coil may be stopped briefly and cut by stationary shears. For the second, the sheet may be unrolled and cut by ‘flying shears’ that travel at the same speed as the moving sheet.

Hardened metal may not trim smoothly, producing an uneven edge which may not be easily visible to the naked eye. In addition, hardened slivers may break off as a burr is formed, causing surface damage and contaminating the process. In all cases, an intelligent monitoring system provides the ideal solution.
