Slitting coils can leave them prone to edge damage. AMETEK Surface Vision provides an advanced edge monitoring system, while also inspecting both sides of the slit metal strip.

Coiled aluminum sheets are run through a high-speed slitter, where circular blades are used to divide the sheet into narrower coils of widths that meet required specifications. The slit sheet is then recoiled as it emerges from the slitter.

While the slitter process is very straightforward – the metal is uncoiled, cut to width and recoiled – there are many variables which can go wrong. Knife clearance, blade sharpness, machine maintenance and coil stresses are among many factors which can influence the quality of the slitter process.

Several problems can arise from metal slitting, including poor edge quality, edge burr, edge wave, and surface knife marks. Edge inspection is essential to detect these defects, but the narrow edge surface and speed of the process mean that a high-precision, automated system is the only effective monitoring method.
