Edge Trimmer

Edge trimming is intended to remove impurities and defects from the edge of the metal strips. AMETEK Surface Vision’s system monitors the metal edge to ensure defect removal.

Typically, metal edges are trimmed to be square and flat, using edge-trimming shears to cut the metal to the desired dimensions. The cutting action produces compressive strain which can lead to surface and edge defects.

After rolling, the edges of the metal sheet are irregular and may have some edge cracking. The focus of rolling is on the thickness of the sheet, so it is likely to exceed the required width. Edge trimming lines operate as a high-speed process, with sharp shears to cut the metal to size and remove defects.

Hardened metal may not trim smoothly, producing an uneven edge which may not be easily visible to the naked eye. In addition, hardened slivers may break off, causing surface damage and contaminating the process. In all cases, an intelligent monitoring system provides the ideal solution.
