Etching or engraving plastic relies on intentionally affecting the surface. To detect problems and imperfections, an intelligent classification system is required as part of automated monitoring.

Laser marking systems are often used in the electronics and semiconductor industry to etch plastic through foaming and color changes. Mechanical and chemical etching may also be used to mark the surface for practical or decorative purposes.
