Etching

Etching or engraving plastic relies on intentionally affecting the surface. To detect problems and imperfections, an intelligent classification system is required as part of automated monitoring.

Laser marking systems are often used in the electronics and semiconductor industry to etch plastic through foaming and color changes. Mechanical and chemical etching may also be used to mark the surface for practical or decorative purposes.

Etching and engraving can be performed by several methods, including heat, chemical marking or mechanical force, but all involve creating markings on the surface of the plastic. This can be difficult for monitoring systems to inspect accurately without falsely detecting a surface defect.

Etching is a deliberate action to affect the plastic surface. Any monitoring must be able to distinguish between the intended etching and defective markings. This requires careful inspection and advanced classification software working in seamless combination.
