Solution Casting

This thin-film manufacturing process is used to make flexible plastic components. It is typically a layered process, so automated surface inspection is important to ensure quality of the final product.

Solution casting delivers high-quality thin-film products with improved optical and physical properties. Among the advantages of the finished product are qualities such as uniformity of thickness and dimensional stability. It also offers a wider range of thicknesses compared with film extrusion techniques.

Typically, a polymer is dissolved in a solution into which an inner diameter mold is immersed. The solvent is removed to leave a solid cast layer on the mold. This layer can be laminated or coated before being stripped from the mold to produce the final film.

Surface inspection during the process can detect and classify any defect in the cast layer before further treatment. This supports the quality of the final product, and also ensures time is not wasted in lamination or coating of a substandard product.
